Dr. Deshawnda Williams issued a statement following the tragic loss of life at Uptown Cafe on Stenton Avenue.
On May 4, 2026, a young man, Kenneth Singleton, lost his life in an act of violence at a location long known as a space for community, connection, and fellowship.
The loss is deeply personal to the campaign. Kenneth was the nephew of Field Director Shedrick Felton, known to many as “Chief,” a dedicated community leader who has consistently served the district with compassion and commitment.
Dr. Williams extends her deepest condolences to Kenneth’s mother, Lisa Dixon, to Mr. Felton, and to all family members and loved ones impacted by this loss.
“Our hearts are with the family during this incredibly difficult time. We grieve with you, and we stand with you,” said Dr. Williams.
The incident has also impacted the broader community. Uptown Cafe recently served as a gathering space for supporters and residents. The transformation of a place of unity into a site of tragedy underscores the urgency of addressing violence in a meaningful and sustained way.
Drawing on her experience as a pastor, licensed clinical social worker, and educator, Dr. Williams emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to public safety.
“I have witnessed firsthand the emotional and psychological toll that violence takes on families and communities. We cannot solve this crisis with enforcement alone.”
Dr. Williams called on leaders at every level of government to prioritize:
- Violence prevention initiatives that intervene before crises occur
- Expanded access to trauma-informed mental health care
- Investment in safe, supportive environments for youth
- Addressing systemic root causes, including poverty and lack of access to opportunity
She reaffirmed her commitment to policies that center prevention, healing, and long-term community stability.
“To the residents of the 200th District, your lives matter. Your safety matters. Your peace matters.”
Dr. Williams concluded by emphasizing unity during this time of grief.
“We will not be defined by fear, and we will not be divided by grief. Our work continues, with urgency.”
